I do the zerks for the RWD components every oil change, which is about every 3500 miles... pump in enough so that clean grease is expelled through the seals, and then wipe away whatever excess/purged grease I can with paper towels so it doesn't fling all over the undercarriage.

Though after fulling the tube, I remove the zerk and fish a piece of mechanics wire up through the hole to pull out some of the extra grease before doing the compression bounce so there is less mess. The grease is thick and holds up to 500F so it doesn't melt and run out.
